Sulphur pelletizing process

Introduction of more radical laws on environment protection in the world practice resulted in increase of sulphur production from various sulphur -containing raw materials : natural gas, metallurgical gases, petroleum products and others. In many CIS countries laws have been adopted prohibiting bulk sulphur production, which when handling due to dust formation is very harmful to the environment.
Implementation of environment protection laws initiated a rapid process of developing new technologies for products and gases desulphurization and production of elementary sulphur as well as development of new environmentally compatible sulphur forms which allow to mechanize loading and unloading, to cut storage surface area, to render sulphur processing automatic and to enhance to a great degree the ecological situation both at sulpur producers' and consumers'.
The following pelletizing process is suggested for implementation:
Liquid sulphur is pumped from a storage to a filter where it is purified of impurities. Purified sulphur flows through a uniform input-output tank to a pelletizer producing sulphur drops. After the pelletizer these sulphur drops come to a pelletizing column where they are cooled to solid state by circulating water. Resulted pellets are dewatered to a water content of 3% and by belt conveyor transported to a pelletized sulphur storehouse.
Institute developed modular units for sulphur pelletizing with annual production capacities of 50 000, 100 000, 200 000 and 500 000 t.
Capital investment in a 100 000 t/y unit is 500000 USD. Capital expenditure depends on the degree of utilization of operating equipment available at the plant and will be determined by design.
